About Us

The Council of Parishes of Southern New Jersey was formed in May 2008 after Bishop Galante unveiled his plan to cut nearly in half the number of parishes in the Diocese of Camden. Many of the churches Galante seeks to close are historic in nature and therefore small. Since Galante prefers megachurches and desires to rid the diocese of its rich Catholic history and culture, the Council naturally opposes the unnecessary and harmful merger of our parishes and closure of our churches. The Council currently represents parishes in nearly all of the merger groups throughout the Diocese of Camden.

Warning about "Worship Sites"

Bishop Joseph Galante, and many of the conveners and pastors of the Diocese of Camden are making promises to unsuspecting parishioners about keeping their churches open after a merger takes place as a "worship site." This simply is unrealistic. It is a tool used by the diocese to disarm any parishioner resistance to a church merger. The day after the merger takes place, or any time thereafter, the new pastor, under a directive from the bishop has the authority to close and sell off any church or… Continue

Mansion for the Nuns

Not a bad layout for five sisters. It is only four times the size of the house that I live in raising my three daughters on my own. That gives each nun almost as much space as I have total for the four of us! Just more of an example of a Bishop out of control. And he should not talk about Priests retiring without replacements. What about the Priests that he chases out because they "Do not fit in with the Priesthood of this diocese."??? Father Michael Spagnolo from St Teresa of Avila Church in Br… Continue

Doublespeak South Jersey

St Nicholas in Egg Harbor City is the latest to say no to the bishop but the public relations double-speak continues on:

"The feelings of loss when there is a change like this really are natural and are to be expected," [diocese spokesman Andrew] Walton said. "And yet, the bishop announced retentions for the reconfiguration because he felt it was necessary at this time, that it was necessary if the church is to experience gr… Continue

Respect for Catholic Parish Life

On a snowy January 19, 2002 my husband, Ed (Byrnes) and I were married by his brother, the late Father John Byrnes at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic church in Woodstown in front of all of our family and friends. If you know where Cowtown Rodeo is St. Joe's is not too far from there. St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church is a small little country church which resembles the little country churches often depicted on Christmas cards. Our wedding was beautiful.

My Daddy walked me down the aisle to my Ed.… Continue

More Updates - This Time Available to All

Now the Council of Parishes Resources tab mentioned in the prior blog post is available for everyone to view. I had it configured incorrectly - oops! Also private Groups may now be set up to facilitate public or private (depending on who you allow to access) communications within parish level groups or other sub-groups of the Council of Parishes.

Updates to Website

Our website has recently been updated with two new features. First, information on how to oppose your parish merger, along with sample letters and appeals, are available under the Resources tab. You can consider it our little "Anti-Merger Manual." This section will be expanded as time permits.

Second, there is a new tab for Videos, where you can see the latest videos related to church closings, including last night's ABC News coverage of the Boston vigils, now well into their fourth year.

Bishop Comes to Bridgeton

I just left church. The Bishop and Father Terri were there to present their horse and pony explaination about the destruction of the Catholic family in the Greater Bridgeton Area; including Immaculate Conception and St Teresa in Bridgeton, St Mary's in Rosenhayne and St Michaels in Cedarville, as well as Port Norris. I could not last until the end. To sit in front of the people of faith and lie with a smirk on his face, while saying that he would "swear on the bible" (a term I never heard a Prie… Continue

Do Not Relent

I cannot tell you the pain and suffering that comes from having your last Mass and carry out the Slovenian flag and watch the church being locked. For that reason I urge you to fight with all that is available to you. Do not allow yourself to suffer what we are. To be baptized, then confirmed, educated in the school, be an altar boy, and have a 1915 photo of your father standing up on the scaffolding with the church 35% completed, to have your mother, father, brother and sister buried from that… Continue
